America’s Treaty Allies: Worth Going to War Over || David Santoro | COURTESY: LtCol Mark A McDonald, USMC (Ret) MILINET

In a recent essay, Justin Logan asks the fundamental question about U.S. alliance commitments: does the existence of such commitments automatically create an interest worth going to war over for the United States?

Explaining that no one in Washington sees any interest in going to war against Russia over the current crisis in Ukraine, Logan wonders whether the United States should contemplate doing so for countries where it has even smaller interests, such as the Baltic states, only because they, unlike Ukraine, are U.S. allies under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He argues that Washington would be misguided to waste blood and treasure just to honor what he refers to as a “sheet of paper,” and warns against the danger of forging alliances in places where there is no interest that warrants war.

Ukraine and Our Useless Outrage: The history of Obama’s foreign-policy posturing bodes ill for the future of Ukraine || Victor Davis Hanson | COURTESY: Maj Dennis Shea, USAF (Ret)  MILINET

Don’t step over the line and re-militarize the Rhineland. Absorbing Austria would cross a red line. Breaking up Czechoslovakia is unacceptable. Get out of Poland by the announced deadline. The rest was history.

Don’t dare blow up another American military barracks overseas. Don’t even consider another attack on the World Trade Center. Don’t even try blowing up one more American embassy in East Africa. Don’t ever put a hole in a U.S. warship again. The rest was history.

President Obama issued yet another one of those sorts of warnings to stop the violence to Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych just before protesters drove Yanukovych out of office. “There will be consequences if people step over the line,” Obama threatened.

Ben Rhodes, Obama’s deputy national-security adviser, amplified that veiled warning. He called the Ukrainian government’s repression “completely outrageous” — as opposed to just outrageous or completely, completely outrageous.

Secretary of State John Kerry joined the chorus of condemnation by hinting at economic sanctions if Yanukovych didn’t stop his violent crackdown on protesters.

Why does this rhetorical assault sound familiar?

Russian moves raise stakes in Ukraine conflict || By DALTON BENNETT | Courtesy: MILINET

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine, Ukraine (AP) — Masked gunmen stormed the parliament of Ukraine’s strategic Crimea region as Russian fighter jets screamed above the border, while Ukraine’s newly formed government pledged to prevent a national breakup with the strong backing of the West – the stirrings of a potentially dangerous confrontation reminiscent of Cold War brinksmanship.

Moscow reportedly granted shelter to Ukraine’s fugitive president, Viktor Yanukovych, who was said to be holed up in a luxury government retreat and to have scheduled a news conference Friday near the Ukrainian border. As gunmen wearing unmarked camouflage uniforms erected a sign reading “Crimea is Russia” in the provincial capital, Ukraine’s interim prime minister declared that the Black Sea territory “has been and will be a part of Ukraine.”

The escalating conflict sent Ukraine’s finances plummeting further, prompting Western leaders to prepare an emergency financial package.

Yanukovych, whose approach to Moscow set off three months of pro-Europe protests, finally fled by helicopter last weekend as his allies deserted him. The humiliating exit was a severe blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who had been celebrating his signature Olympics even as Ukraine’s drama came to a head. The Russian leader has long dreamt of pulling Ukraine – a huge country of 46 million people considered the cradle of Russian civilization – closer into Moscow’s orbit.

Samantha Power Still Can’t Get Foot Out of Mouth || by Yori Yanover

UN Ambassador Samantha Power with Secretary of State John Kerry. Both are reputed to be highly intelligent, and so one must wonder how intelligent is the source of that information.

And then she went and did something stupider.

This is as much fun to watch as a guy slipping on the stuff he didn’t pick up after his doggie. Last Sunday night, our Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power made the mistake of tweeting the tried and true official claptrap about peace and understanding and how we should all restrain ourselves and do our little bit so that violence will stop. It’s stupid, it’s entirely without any foundation in the reality of our current universe, but it’s her leftist mantra and she has no other, so she tweeted it.

Big mistake. Because the tweet came as her takeaway from her own speech as the guest of honor at a UCLA memorial dinner for slain Jewish journalist Daniel Pearl, and she made it sound, God help her, like the beheaded Pearl should have curbed his violent tendencies, because, hey, look how he ended up.

There’s stupid and there’s stupid, and this one broke the record for stupid, held, I believe, by Sarah Palin for seeing Russia from her house, and Alexander Hague’s attempt at a shortcut to the U.S. presidency with his “I’m in charge.”

Contentions Obama Consciously Engineering America’s Decline || Peter Wehner | Courtesy: Gunny G. Cocked & Locked

In remarks today, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said U.S. global military dominance can “no longer be taken for granted.” He said this even as he was in the process of announcing that the Obama administration plans to shrink the United States Army to its smallest force since before the World War II buildup. (For context, the Army will go from a post-September 11 peak of 570,000 to between 440,000 and 450,000, the smallest Army since 1940.)

Max Boot does an excellent job laying out the problems with this proposal here and here. I’d simply add that the fact that American military dominance can no longer be taken for granted is not problematic for someone of Barack Obama’s worldview. In fact, he views the weakening of American power as a downright positive thing, as a contributor to peace and stability, and a means through which America will be more respected and loved in the world.

Mr. Obama is wrong on every count.

UN Plotting to “Dramatically Alter” Your Views and Behavior || by Alex Newman

The United Nations is currently working on a far-reaching plot, developed with radical Obama administration policy architect John Podesta, to “profoundly and dramatically” alter your “worldview” in the name of shackling humanity under a UN-managed “universal sustainable development agenda.” According to the controversial report produced for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon by a team of establishment “eminent persons,” within the next six years, no realm of the human experience will escape the “profound transformation” toward “a new paradigm” demanded by globalist bureaucrats.

The UN document, while packed with contradictory machinations, essentially outlines what establishment proponents of global government have long described as a “New World Order.” In essence, the UN panel called for a top-down restructuring of human civilization under the guise of tackling poverty, “unsustainable” activities, and “climate change.” The international outfit and its mostly dictatorial member regimes will set the agenda, with regional, national, and sub-national governments expected to foist it on humanity.
