Supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad attend a rally to support him and the army, at the coastal city of Jableh in Lattakia

Some express their loyalty in general displays of patriotism, while others explicitly call on the 48-year-old president to announce he will stand in the vote, which is due to be held by July.

Just 18 months ago, Assad’s grip over his capital seemed to be slipping as rebels gained ground around Damascus. Since then his forces have consolidated control in central Syria. Rebels still insist his departure is precondition for any peace deal, but having lost military momentum they are unable to dictate terms.

At a gathering in southern Damascus last month to honor victims of Syria’s conflict, local officials and clerics turned the solemn memorial into a political rally.

Kerry: We’re shocked, shocked that Russia is enabling Assad to stay in power || by Ed Morrissey

Talks in Geneva between the combatants in Syria’s civil war broke down earlier today. US Secretary of State John Kerry marched to a podium to express his dismay over the situation, and put the blame on three forces that are enabling Bashar al-Assad to remain in power and “double down” on a military solution to the conflict. To the surprise of exactly no one, those forces are Hezbollah, Iran, and Russia:

Kerry: We’re shocked, shocked that Russia is enabling Assad to stay in power

Commentary by Jeffrey Hardin

It angers me that Kerry with his level of  incompetency would be confirmed by Rand Paul and other Rinos to began with, who made claim that John Kerry was well suited and qualified for the Secretary of the State position when we the American people damn well knew he wasn’t!

We demanded he not be confirmed and like everything else, they, the GOP & Rino’s turned their backs on us, thus mocking us…
Of course Russia was going to back Assad, as they should, they have made that clear since 2012 when this rebellion started, what fools they are to have missed that.
Russia knows, that if Assad falls, so will the whole Near East into the hands of the Wahhabi Salafi…
That’s a given….

Three years ago, an uprising against the Assad regime turned into what looked like a straightforward civil war between Syrian government forces and rebels. However, over time, what had started as a largely secular opposition movement began to take on more of a radical Islamist tone, with two al Qaeda offshoots — the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and Jabhat al-Nusra — becoming the dominant forces on the ground across the rebel-held North.

One VICE filmmaker managed to secure unprecedented access to both al-Qaeda factions battling Syria’s government forces, despite the risk of journalists being kidnapped. This is a remarkable portrait of the foreign volunteers and local Syrians willing to fight and die to establish a new caliphate on Europe’s doorstep.

More Than Two Dozen Women and Children are Massacred by Syrian ‘Rebels’

Islamist fighters battling Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces seized control of an Alawite village in the central province of Hama on Sunday, part of an offensive to try to cut off supply routes from Damascus to the north of the country.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said the Islamists killed 25 people in the village of Maan, mainly from a pro-Assad National Defence Force militia.

But the government said the dead were mainly women and children and accused the fighters of committing a massacre on the eve of the resumption of peace talks in Geneva.

Residents of Maan, around 5 …
