The first-ever archaeological excavations at the Nazi death camp Treblinka in Poland have revealed new mass graves, as well as the first physical evidence that this camp held gas chambers. The camp had been bulldozed in 1943. To cover their tracks, the Nazis went so far as to plant crops and build a farmhouse on the leveled ground. Presented in a new documentary, “Treblinka: Hitler’s Killing Machine,” which aired Saturday on the Smithsonian Channel, the excavations revealed brick walls and foundations from the gas chambers, as well as mass graves and massive amounts of human bone, some of which was close to the ground’s surface or exposed to the elements. Historians estimate that about 900,000 Jews were murdered at the camp over just 16 months.

The Nazis began deporting Jews to Treblinka in July 1942, mostly from the ghettos of Warsaw and Radom. There were two camps: Treblinka I was a forced-labor camp where prisoners were made to manufacture gravel for the Nazi war effort. A little more than a mile (2 kilometers) away was Treblinka II, the death camp, where Jews were sent on trains. The victims were told that they were going to a transit camp before being sent on to a new life in eastern Europe. The deception was elaborate: Nazis erected a fake train station in the remote spot, complete with false ticket-counter and clock. “There was an orchestra set up near the reception area of the camp to play,” archaeologist Caroline Sturdy Colls told Live Science. “It was run by a famous composer at the time, Artur Gold.” The gas chamber was the subject of the teams’ second dig. The excavations revealed a brick wall and foundation. There were two sets of gas chambers built at Treblinka, the first with a capacity of about 600 people, the second able to hold about 5,000. The gas chambers were the only brick buildings in the camp, Colls said. The digs also revealed orange tiles that matched eyewitness descriptions of the floor of the gas chambers. Each tile was stamped with a Star of David, apparently in order to fool the victims into believing that the building was “a Jewish-style bathhouse.”

The Jewish deportees were split into two groups, one of men and the other of women and children, and ordered to undress for “delousing.” After handing over their valuables and documents, the victims were sent to the gas chambers, which were pumped full of exhaust fumes from tank engines. “Within about 20 minutes, some 5,000 people inside would be killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. Corpses were initially buried in mass graves, but later in 1942 and 1943, Jewish slave laborers were forced to reopen the graves and cremate the bodies on enormous pyres,” adds Live Science. After the war, Treblinka was turned into a memorial. Out of respect for the victims, no excavation was allowed there, until Colls and her colleagues won approval from Polish authorities as well as Jewish religious leaders to conduct a limited dig.

Everything we know about fighting international terrorists we’ve learned from 19th century legislation against pirates. Pirates used to be a serious security concern on the high seas, and the emerging civilized nations got together to invent a new legal language to deal with them.

It was decided back then that by virtue of their being enemies of civilized society, pirates should not be entitled to the legal rights that civilized people are encouraged to take for granted. They may be shot on sight without due process, they are not entitled to any protections and neither are their women and children.

It was a very wise legislation, which brought results rather quickly. The American and European navies launched periodic campaigns against pirates, most notably off the North African coast, and killed many of them.

I’m mentioning the piracy solution because our colleagues to the left, Haaretz, has just published a call by Judith Butler and Rashid Khalidi on behalf of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel, for all cultural and educational institutions “to have the courage and the principle to stand for, and safeguard, the very principles of free expression and the free exchange of ideas that make those institutions possible.”

IDF targets Gaza rocket squad, at least 2 killed || By David Barnett

The Israeli Air Force targeted a terror cell this evening that was preparing to launch rockets from Gaza towards Israel. Officials in the Gaza Strip said two Palestinians were killed and two others wounded in the strike, AFP reported.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) identified one of those killed, Musab Musa Za’anin, as a member of the group’s military wing, the al Quds Brigades. The second Palestinian killed in the strike was identified as Sharif Nasser, who was claimed by the Mujahideen Brigades as one of its fighters.

Tonight’s strike comes just a few days after the IAF struck a rocket launch site in Gaza on Feb. 28. Israeli officials have expressed concern in recent weeks about escalating violence emanating from the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

In the latest anti-Semitic attack in the Ukraine, vandals on Friday sprayed swastikas and graffiti reading “Death to the Jews” on a synagogue in Simferopol in the Crimea region, reported the Israel Hayom daily newspaper. “There is no doubt that it was important to anti-Semites to commit this crime,” Anatoly Gendin, head of the Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities of Crimea, told the newspaper. “Since the crisis started, prices have risen by 30 percent and people aren’t receiving their pensions. As always, the Jews are being blamed, and I’m scared to think where it could progress,” he added. The anti-Semitic incident in Crimea took place the same day that the Russians began to take over the peninsula.

According to the Jewish community leader, to get to the building the vandals had to climb the 2-meter wall that surrounds the synagogue compound. Rabbi Misha Kapustin, a leader in the Crimean Jewish community, told Israel Hayom that he had asked worshippers to stay away from the site. “This was the first time in my life that a synagogue was closed,” he said. “I realized that the situation wouldn’t get better. We don’t need to wait for them to riot against us.” Rabbi Kapustin added that intends to write a letter to a number of heads of state, appealing to them to do “whatever is in their power to prevent a Russian invasion. To [ask them to] not abandon Ukrainian Jews.”

Anti-Semitic incidents have been recorded in Ukraine for many years, but have been on the rise recently, in the wake of the unrest there that toppled Viktor Yanukovych. In January, unknown assailants stabbed a hareidi man in Kiev as he was making his way home from synagogue on a Friday night. As the political situation in the country worsened, reports indicated that extremists have been targeting the Jewish community in Ukraine, including a member of the opposition. A synagogue southeast of Kiev was firebombed last week by unknown assailants. At the same time, reported Israel Hayom, other voices are also making themselves heard in Crimea. A representative of the pro-Russian party that controls the Sevastopol city council said that “there are no soldiers or armed people in the streets. There aren’t a lot of Jews here, but those who are left can relax.” The Rabbi of the city of Kharkov, Rabbi Moshe Moskowitz, told Arutz Sheva last week that a number of local Jews have already expressed a desire to leave Ukraine and emigrate to Israel. The unrest of recent month is what has brought this desire to the fore, he said. MK Rina Frankel (Yesh Atid) has called on Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to launch an emergency aliyah operation to bring Ukrainian Jewry to safety as a result of the unrest.
