(Reuters) – Security industry pioneer RSA adopted not just one but two encryption tools developed by the U.S. National Security Agency, greatly increasing the spy agency’s ability to eavesdrop on some Internet communications, according to a team of academic researchers.
Reuters reported in December that the NSA had paid RSA $10 million to make a now-discredited cryptography system the default in software used by a wide range of Internet and computer security programs. The system, called Dual Elliptic Curve, was a random number generator, but it had a deliberate flaw – or “back door” – that allowed the NSA to crack the encryption.
A group of professors from Johns Hopkins, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Illinois and elsewhere now say they have discovered that a second NSA tool exacerbated the RSA software’s vulnerability.
The professors found that the tool, known as the “Extended Random” extension for secure websites, could help crack a version of RSA’s Dual Elliptic Curve software tens of thousands of times faster, according to an advance copy of their research shared with Reuters.

The deadline to signup for Obamacare technically ends today as the open enrollment period comes to an end. The White House is likely to fall short of its signup goal of seven million people. Last week, the White House announced that people who are “standing in line” for an Obamacare plan will be given an extension past the March 31 deadline to sign up. Open enrollment starts again on November 15.
Naturally on the last day for signups, Healthcare.gov was down earlier this morning. There is currently an alert on Healthcare.gov that says, “During times of especially high demand, you may be queued to begin your online Marketplace application to ensure the best possible shopping experience.”
If true, the long-hoped-for freedom of Pollard – who has been held captive in the US on spying charges since 1987 – will fall out around the Jewish holiday of Passover (Pesach), which falls on April 15 this year. Passover is the traditional holiday marking Israel’s redemption from 210 years of slavery in ancient Egypt, – a fitting date for Pollard’s release.
The first-ever archaeological excavations at the Nazi death camp Treblinka in Poland have revealed new mass graves, as well as the first physical evidence that this camp held gas chambers. The camp had been bulldozed in 1943. To cover their tracks, the Nazis went so far as to plant crops and build a farmhouse on the leveled ground. Presented in a new documentary, “Treblinka: Hitler’s Killing Machine,” which aired Saturday on the Smithsonian Channel, the excavations revealed brick walls and foundations from the gas chambers, as well as mass graves and massive amounts of human bone, some of which was close to the ground’s surface or exposed to the elements. Historians estimate that about 900,000 Jews were murdered at the camp over just 16 months.
The Nazis began deporting Jews to Treblinka in July 1942, mostly from the ghettos of Warsaw and Radom. There were two camps: Treblinka I was a forced-labor camp where prisoners were made to manufacture gravel for the Nazi war effort. A little more than a mile (2 kilometers) away was Treblinka II, the death camp, where Jews were sent on trains. The victims were told that they were going to a transit camp before being sent on to a new life in eastern Europe. The deception was elaborate: Nazis erected a fake train station in the remote spot, complete with false ticket-counter and clock. “There was an orchestra set up near the reception area of the camp to play,” archaeologist Caroline Sturdy Colls told Live Science. “It was run by a famous composer at the time, Artur Gold.” The gas chamber was the subject of the teams’ second dig. The excavations revealed a brick wall and foundation. There were two sets of gas chambers built at Treblinka, the first with a capacity of about 600 people, the second able to hold about 5,000. The gas chambers were the only brick buildings in the camp, Colls said. The digs also revealed orange tiles that matched eyewitness descriptions of the floor of the gas chambers. Each tile was stamped with a Star of David, apparently in order to fool the victims into believing that the building was “a Jewish-style bathhouse.”
The Jewish deportees were split into two groups, one of men and the other of women and children, and ordered to undress for “delousing.” After handing over their valuables and documents, the victims were sent to the gas chambers, which were pumped full of exhaust fumes from tank engines. “Within about 20 minutes, some 5,000 people inside would be killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. Corpses were initially buried in mass graves, but later in 1942 and 1943, Jewish slave laborers were forced to reopen the graves and cremate the bodies on enormous pyres,” adds Live Science. After the war, Treblinka was turned into a memorial. Out of respect for the victims, no excavation was allowed there, until Colls and her colleagues won approval from Polish authorities as well as Jewish religious leaders to conduct a limited dig.
Marines of 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Battalion Landing Team, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit wait to be extracted by helicopter during a rehearsal of the final exercise at Exercise Africa Lion 2012. This year’s exercise is a scaled-down version in preparation for African Lion 2015, which is slated to be the biggest the continent has ever seen. (Cpl. Tyler Main / Marine Corps)
Marines are back in Morocco for African Lion a year after the local government abruptly canceled the largest annual exercise on the continent, sending hundreds of leathernecks packing, and they’re preparing for next year’s iteration to be the most robust yet.
Members of 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, out of Camp Lejeune, N.C., and 25th Marines, a Massachusetts-based reserve unit, are participating in the multinational exercise that teams them with Moroccan and German troops from March 27 to April 5. This year’s exercise is a scaled-down version in preparation for African Lion 2015, which is slated to be the biggest the continent has ever seen. The plan is to combine it with another U.S. Africa Command-sponsored exercise also held in Morocco, said Master Sgt. Chad McMeen, a spokesman for Marine Forces Europe and Africa.
“The 2015 exercise is expected to incorporate the Air Force F-16 exercise, formerly known as Majestic Eagle, into the training making it the largest planned exercise in its history,” he said.
African Lion is intentionally planned to go from a large-scale exercise one year to a smaller version the following, McMeen said.
Christians versus Muslims in Central African Republic
Articles on current events in the Central African Republic (CAR) such as the one I posted two days ago often generate a great deal of commentary. Last year, Muslim Seleka militias killed tens of thousands of Christians and drove 400,000 from their homes. This year, Christian anti-balaka militias have retaliated with vengeance, massacring hundreds of thousands of Muslims and driving millions more from their homes — so far. Muslims are just 15% of CAR’s population, and some anti-balaka leaders are promising to kill every Muslim that doesn’t flee the country. This is a fact. I may not like this fact, and you may not like this fact, but it’s a fact nonetheless.
One response is to say that the Christians in CAR are just defending themselves from the Muslims. I won’t disagree with that, except to say that anti-balaka leaders saying that they’re going to kill all the Muslims seems to me to cross the line from self-defense into genocide.
God’s Not Dead takes on all comers — the new Atheists, Islam and even Communism. And it does so without a sniveling apology for our existence as believers or for Christ’s exclusive claims.
God’s Not Dead is an alarm for unconverted sinners and a wake-up call for slumbering Christians and that is why it is worth seeing, and seeing more than once. This is the movie for which the mall-churches should be buying out theaters and holding small groups; but you won’t see the world or the worldly church embrace God’s Not Dead because, frankly, it confronts them.
With only 780 screens the Pure Flix movie God’s Not Dead shocked Hollywood Box Office gurus by pulling in 9.2 million and a fourth place overall finish this past weekend. Raking in just under $12,000 per screen average, God’s Not Dead just may be the most popular top 5 movie that you’ve never heard about. The popularity of the film is being spread as the Gospel should be, by word of mouth from people who have seen it and been authentically touched by it.
Without the big budget or celebrity splash surrounding Son of God, this collaboration between Pure Flix and Freestyle Releasing has Variety and Entertainment Weekly hailing it as the “Biggest Shocker” and “Biggest Surprise” of the weekend. But this movie is a success for a different reason: It’s not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. On numerous occasions it shares that gospel in a direct and dramatic way.
